Unlocking Social Capital
What is Social Capital?
Social capital refers to the relationships, networks, and trust that people have within a community. It helps individuals and groups work together effectively.
For example, imagine a neighborhood where everyone knows each other and helps one another. If one person needs a ride to the doctor, their neighbors are likely to offer help because they have built trust and friendship. This strong connection among neighbors is social capital, making the community stronger and more supportive.
Individuals with higher social capital, especially through social participation and networks, exhibit healthier behaviors and experience better physical and psychological well-being (Nieminen et al., 2013). Social relationships, characterized by trust and reciprocity, contribute positively to society as a whole (Scrivens and Smith, 2013).
By fostering community connections, Women Owned Narratives (WON) aims to enhance the social capital of women, promoting a healthier and more vibrant community.
